BMW has unveiled a four-door version of its 6er-Reihe coupé, outlining its intentions to grow each series with multiple body styles.
Called the Gran Coupé, the new variant of the 6-series joins the existing cabriolet and coupé.
If the current 5-series is already considered svelte, the new 6er-Reihe Gran Coupé takes that further. It’s reminiscent of the two-door Sechser, but conceptually it has shades of some of the most glamorous four-door hardtops that graced American roads during their heyday, such as the 1960s Lincoln Continental.
The Gran Coupé measures just over 5 m in length, with a wheelbase of 2,968 mm.
Models at launch are the twin-scroll turbo six 640i (235 kW or 320 PSl 179–83 g/km of carbon dioxide emissions) and three-litre turbodiesel 640d (230 kW or 313 PS, 146–9 g/km) with the twin-turbo 4·4 V8 650i (330 kW or 450 PS, 199–206 g/km) to be added later. Stop–start is standard on all models. The 650i will feature BMW’s Xdrive four-wheel-drive system.
With BMW spinning off the next 3er coupé into a new 4-series, it may herald a greater diversification of models in the near future.
